The Essentials

Every student’s bag will be a little different depending on their program and courses, but here are a few must-haves that are useful no matter what you’re studying.

Student ID
Whether you keep it in your bag, on a lanyard or stored digitally on your phone, your student ID is essential for accessing campus buildings, borrowing books and writing tests.

Laptop or Tablet
At McMaster, most course materials are accessed through A2L (Avenue to Learn). You’ll find assignment instructions, submission links, grades, course updates and sometimes even lecture slides and readings online. A laptop or tablet is also helpful for taking notes during class.

Notebook and Pen/Pencil
If you prefer taking handwritten notes, that’s totally valid! Some content might be easier to jot down manually depending on the class, so keeping a notebook and pen or pencil handy is always a good idea.

Chargers for Your Devices
Whether you’re working late in the library or attending back-to-back lectures, having your charger can be a lifesaver (for you or a friend). Thankfully, there are plenty of outlets available across campus.

Headphones
A must-have if you’re studying in a noisy space or just want to vibe to music while walking to class.

Wallet
Handy for carrying ID, a debit/credit card or your student card for grabbing coffee or snacks between lectures.

Hand Sanitizer
It’s always good to stay clean, especially in high-traffic areas.

Water Bottle
Staying hydrated is key! McMaster has lots of water bottle refill stations, making it easy to top up throughout the day.

Phone
Your phone can help with navigating campus, checking class schedules, accessing transit info, and staying in touch with friends and family.

More Items to Consider

Depending on your personal preferences and academic needs, you may also want to pack.

Course Materials/Calculator
Some courses will require specific items like a calculator, lab equipment or textbooks. These will be listed in your syllabus, and often, you can choose between digital and physical versions of the materials.

Agenda or Planner
Whether it’s a physical planner or a digital app, keeping track of deadlines, assignments and events is essential for staying organized. Getting in the habit of using one early in the term will save you a lot of stress later on.

Pencil Case
If you use multiple writing tools, highlighters or erasers, a pencil case can help keep everything together.

Snacks
Having a granola bar or some fruit in your bag can give you the energy boost you need between classes or help you save money on campus food.

We hope this list helps you feel more confident and prepared as you get ready for classes! Remember, the most important thing is that whatever you carry with you supports your needs and sets you up for success.

Here are our top 5 study spots at McMaster, complete with useful features, hidden gems and insider tips!

1. Mills Memorial Library

Mills is the central library on campus and is often a go-to for students across all Faculties. It’s a large, multi-floor building offering a range of study environments—from silent study zones on higher floors to group tables and open seating on the lower levels.

What makes Mills extra special:

CATS (Campus Accessibility Tech Space): Located in Mills, CATS is a dedicated study space for students registered with Student Accessibility Services (SAS). It’s a quiet, distraction-free zone with specialized tech and ergonomic setups. If you’re a SAS student, you can apply for a key card to access this space at your convenience.

Writing and Academic Skills Hub: This is more than just a place for academic support, it’s a quiet, independent study space tucked away on the first floor. It’s ideal if you’re looking for a productive, peaceful environment. You can also book one-on-one appointments for writing advising, academic coaching and peer mentoring.

2. Thode Library

Located near the engineering and science buildings, Thode Library is often the first choice for students in STEM fields, but its quiet, focused energy makes it a great option for anyone who wants to concentrate.

Inside, you’ll find:

A silent study floor on the upper level where students are extremely respectful of noise levels. It’s the kind of place where you can hear a pin drop, perfect for deep work.

Downstairs, there are desktop computers, collaborative areas and group study rooms with whiteboards and projectors.

It’s also home to advanced scientific databases and journals for anyone doing lab reports, theses, or research-heavy assignments.

3. Peter George Centre for Living and Learning (PGCLL)

One of the newer academic buildings on campus, PGCLL offers a clean, modern design with an atmosphere that’s both welcoming and motivating. The space is flooded with natural light, and there are several different types of seating, from large communal tables and group booths to cozy corners with individual desks.

It’s an especially great spot for:

Residence students (since it’s connected to dorms!)

Small group meetings or collaborative projects

Independent study in a light, open space

Because PGCLL isn’t a formal library, the noise level is low but not silent, making it ideal if you like a bit of background sound (think quiet conversations and laptop typing).

4. Health Sciences Library

This library is a go-to for students in nursing, medicine, health sciences, and life sciences programs, but it’s open to all students. This library is one of the quietest and most focused spaces on campus.

The environment is calm, serious, and highly focused, great for students who need minimal distractions.

Study spaces include individual carrels, bookable group study rooms, and computer labs.

It’s close to the hospital, anatomy labs, and health sciences classes—making it ultra convenient for students in clinical or pre-clinical programs.

5. MUSC (McMaster University Student Centre)

MUSC is often thought of as just a hangout spot or food court—but it’s also a fantastic and versatile study location, especially if you like variety and convenience. With multiple floors of seating, you can pick the type of atmosphere you’re in the mood for:

Main floor: Great for casual studying, people-watching, or working while you eat.

Second floor and up: Much quieter, with couches, armchairs, long desks, and less foot traffic.

Nearby food options: Booster Juice, Union Market, and Tim Hortons make it easy to grab snacks and stay fuelled.

Plus, because it’s so centrally located, MUSC is perfect for squeezing in a productive hour between classes or meetings. It’s not a silent space, but the background buzz is light and energizing.

There’s a space at McMaster that matches your mood, your study style, and your goals. Try different spots until you find what works best for you, and don’t be afraid to switch it up based on the type of task you’re working on. Happy studying!

This Financial Literacy Month, we welcomed finance experts Rob Carrick and Roma Luciw back to McMaster for a candid conversation about personal finance and money management. Rob is a personal finance columnist and Roma is a personal finance editor at The Globe and Mail. Together, they host a podcast called Stress Test, that focuses on demystifying common financial topics for a gen-z and millennial audience.

How can financial literacy benefit you? For one, it can help empower and equip you with the tools to make the best financial decisions for you.

Here’s how Rob and Roma addressed three pressing financial topics:

Managing financial pressure

Rob and Roma start by acknowledging that the costs associated with getting a university education have gone up quite a bit in recent years. Many of the questions they received from students were around how to set yourself up financially by investing and saving. However, with financial pressure at an all-time high, Rob’s number one piece of advice for students is to avoid accumulating more debt.

There will be time to invest once you’ve graduated and have started earning an income, but it is best to “contain your debt to your student loans, if you have student loans. If you’re able to save a little bit, I think that’s great,” says Rob. If possible, he suggests keeping an emergency fund in a high interest savings account. This is a risk-free place to park your savings and earn between 2 to 3% interest, so you have a cushion for when you need a new laptop or you get an expensive dental bill.

Investing as a student

Rob shares that it’s best to invest with money you won’t need in the next few years. This means that if you have not accumulated any debt, and you have money left over after you’ve paid for the essentials and contributed to an emergency fund, you could invest that cash. “In order to have almost a guaranteed great outcome from stock market investing, you have to have a 10-year horizon. Less than that, you’ve got to think about saving and keeping your money safe,” says Rob.

As a student, Rob advises avoiding paying extra fees associated with banking and investing alike. Nowadays, there are lots of options available to you. So, do your research, and make sure you are making an informed decision when choosing who to trade with.

Lastly<ins>,</ins> it’s also okay to start small when it comes to investing, even as little as $10 will help you get started.

Job searching as a new graduate

“How many of you guys are getting close to graduating?” Roma asks. About half the room raises their hand.

Roma shares that on Stress Test, they talk about how to build and start careers. This includes what to negotiate when it comes to job offers. “One of the best things you can do is negotiate things that are feasible,” says Roma. <ins></ins>

Salary can be negotiated, but “benefits can be worth thousands of dollars,” says Rob. Things like dental work, medical care, mental health support, physiotherapy and massage can cost hundreds, sometimes thousands of dollars, and having benefits can save you from paying out of pocket.

One student in the audience shares that they currently have two job offers on the table: one offers a lower salary with a better projected career growth, and the other offers a higher salary and better benefits, but less projected career growth. <ins></ins>

Roma asks, “which one are you more excited about?”

If you find yourself in this scenario, especially in this financial climate, Rob suggests asking yourself some important questions. For example, is this the career you want? The answer can help determine whether career growth is a worthwhile focus when evaluating offers. Additionally, consider whether you have debts to pay off. If so, a higher salary can help you lower that debt at a faster rate.

To learn more about these topics from Rob and Roma, visit <ins><ins>The </ins>Globe and Mail’s website</ins> and subscribe to the Stress Test podcast.

Although … the guidelines do specify a minimum of three outside sources, and you haven’t even chosen a topic yet. You also didn’t do too well on the midterm, and you promised yourself you’d make up for it by working hard on this paper. Not to mention, spending the next few hours on this essay will push back all the other coursework that is slowly piling up.

*TAP*

What is contract cheating?

An evolving “business.” The scenario above describes what is known as “contract cheating“—hiring a third party to complete your academic work—and is in direct violation of McMaster’s Academic Integrity Policy. It also alludes to some of the reasons why students are driven to such violations and the explanations they may give for their actions.

Contract cheating is often associated or even conflated with the term “essay mill,” which conjures the image of a factory full of wage labourers churning out countless papers day after day. Although essay mills make up a good portion of contract cheating outfits, there are also contract cheating services that are just as happy to complete an entire course for you—attending class for you and taking quizzes, midterms, exams, etc.

Because contract cheating involves individuals and companies external to McMaster, this category of academic dishonesty has a unique set of risks and consequences. In fact, getting caught might be the least of your worries after hiring what Kristina Nicholls calls “unscrupulous gremlins.” Nicholls and others argue that blackmail and extortion represent new income streams for contract cheating providers, who have no problem threatening to expose students to their home universities unless they pay up.

Once you’ve provided enough personal information, your academic reputation is completely at the mercy of these companies and websites, which may very well not live up to any of the promises they make about quality or timeliness. Allowing contract cheating employees to attend class or take tests on your behalf typically requires you to share your student login credentials, which is another point of vulnerability and a serious breach of university security policy.

The bottom line is that once you’ve crossed this ethical threshold, there is no incentive for contract cheating companies to give you anything. Forcing you to buy their silence is simply more cost-effective.

Just say no? Easier said than done.

As with any type of academic integrity issue, being honest and doing your own work are surefire ways to stay out of trouble. However, research shows that even when students acknowledge that cheating is unethical, there are factors that may cause them to act against their better judgement.

In a recent Canadian survey, the top three justifications for academic dishonesty were related to pressures around workload and performance. These reasons are similar to those given by a group of Australian students when asked why they would choose to hire a contract cheating company. Researchers have also identified that international students may be more likely to engage in contract cheating, possibly due to the added stress of maintaining academic standing to meet study permit conditions.

So, how do you resist the appeal of what might appear, in desperate times, to be a quick and simple solution?

How we can support you

Seeking out and leveraging the supports available to you at McMaster is the first step toward protecting yourself against the predatory practices of contract cheating companies. The Student Success Centre’s programs and services can help you develop productive habits that will contribute to a strong academic foundation.

These are a just a few ways the SSC is here to support you from feeling that cheating is the only way to keep up with your work:

1) Canterbury Falls

Canterbury Falls, located on Canterbury Creek, is a beautiful 9.5-meter ribbon-style waterfall maintained by the Hamilton Lions Club. To get there, take the westbound 5 bus and get off at the Rousseaux and Wilson stop. From there, follow the Canterbury Falls Side Trail, which branches off from the Bruce Trail. It’s about a 20 to 30-minute walk to the falls. Though it’s one of the more challenging waterfalls to access, the scenic view at the end makes it all worthwhile!

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="579" height="937" src="https://studentsuccess.mcmaster.ca/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/image.png" alt="Student in front of Canterbury Falls.
2)Sherman Falls

Sherman Falls, a stunning 17-meter-high curtain waterfall, is part of the well-loved Bruce Trail route. Fed by Ancaster Creek, this gem is nestled between Tiffany Falls and Canterbury Falls, making it a must-visit for any waterfall enthusiast and such a beautiful place to take pictures with friends. Getting there is a breeze—just hop on the westbound 5 bus from any campus stop and get off at Wilson and Montgomery. From there, it’s about a 14-minute walk to the falls. The trail is beginner-friendly and offers a simple, scenic route, perfect for anyone looking to enjoy a peaceful nature hike and catch a glimpse of Sherman Falls’ beauty.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="780" height="1024" src="https://studentsuccess.mcmaster.ca/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/image-2-780x1024.png" alt="Student in front of Sherman Falls.
3)Tiffany Falls

Tiffany Falls Conservation Area is the closest waterfall to campus, making it a perfect destination for students looking to enjoy an outdoor experience between classes or on a free weekend. To reach Tiffany Falls, you have a couple of convenient options. If you take the 5 bus from any campus stop, get off at 1039 Wilson, and it’s just a short 9-minute walk to the falls. Alternatively, you can take the 51 bus and get off at the West Hamilton Loop. From there, it’s a scenic 17-minute walk to your destination. Either option offers a peaceful retreat into nature without venturing too far from campus!

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="774" height="1024" src="https://studentsuccess.mcmaster.ca/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/image-3-774x1024.png" alt="Student in front of Tiffany Falls.
4)Cootes Paradise Nature Sanctuary

Cootes Paradise Nature Sanctuary is a true gem, offering 600 hectares of diverse natural beauty. As one of the most biodiverse areas in the region, it’s a crucial sanctuary for wildlife, especially migratory birds that pass through the area. One of the easiest ways to access the trails is right beside Les Prince Hall. To get there, we took advantage of the free Sobi bikes available to all McMaster students.

Once you arrive, you’ll find yourself surrounded by a network of scenic trails that meander through the sanctuary, some even leading down to the tranquil waterfront. It’s the perfect spot to unwind, reflect, or simply connect with nature. On our hike, which took about two hours, we were lucky enough to spot deer and frogs along the way, and we eventually ended up at Churchill Park near Westdale.

Whether you’re in the mood for an easy walk or a longer hike, Cootes Paradise is a fantastic nearby escape, offering peaceful trails and plenty of opportunities to encounter wildlife. It’s definitely a must-visit spot if you’re looking for a relaxing day in nature!

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="681" height="800" src="https://studentsuccess.mcmaster.ca/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/image.jpeg" alt="Three images of outdoor spots: Ginger Valley Trail, students on a trail, students on a field.
Art and Culture: Art Gallery of Hamilton

123 King St W

Our first stop was the Art Gallery of Hamilton (AGH), which is free for students every day with a valid student ID. If you’re bringing a non-student along, the AGH is free for everyone on Thursdays. The gallery is open Thursday through Sunday and offers a variety of beautiful exhibits that change throughout the year. Don’t forget to check out the gift shop for some great finds!

41 King William St

For lunch, we headed to The Mule. While two tacos weren’t quite filling, they were delicious! For a satisfying meal, we recommend getting 3-4 tacos or 2-3 tacos with an appetizer.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="841" height="970" src="https://studentsuccess.mcmaster.ca/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/image-21.png" alt="Three photos of Relay Coffee.
27 King William St

After lunch, we went to Relay and enjoyed iced matcha lattes and nachos with cheese. With free Wi-Fi available, it was the perfect spot for a quick study break.

Westdale Village has all these qualities and is the perfect spot for a day out, whether you’re in the mood for a delicious meal, snacks, or some unique shopping finds. Here’s your guide to making this most out of your first-year experience.

Getting There

First things first, getting to Westdale is so easy.<s>!</s> Hop on the 1, 5, or 51 bus heading eastbound from any bus stop on campus (the rainbow sidewalk direction from MUSC) and get off at King and Paisley. You may also choose to walk from campus – Westdale is a 12-minute walk from the Student Centre. Now let’s start our adventure.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="751" height="669" src="https://studentsuccess.mcmaster.ca/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/image-2.png" alt="image of King W.
Bookworm’s Paradise: King West Books

1060 King St W, Hamilton

For all my book lovers out there, King West Books is a must-visit, offering a diverse range of genres, ensuring there’s something for every reader. Mixed Media is also connected to King West Books, where you can find cute cards and supplies to fuel your creativity.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="911" height="952" src="https://studentsuccess.mcmaster.ca/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/image-9.png" alt="Four images of Saigon restaurant and the food ordered.
Lunchtime Delight: Saigon Asian Restaurant

1024 King St W, Hamilton

Feeling hungry? Head over to Saigon for an affordable yet incredibly tasty meal. My personal favourite is the special combination pho, listed as #69 on the menu. The broth and tender meat make for a satisfying lunch or dinner, and you even get a free fortune cookie at the end of your meal. You should check it out!

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="702" height="1024" src="https://studentsuccess.mcmaster.ca/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/image-1-702x1024.png" alt="Three images of Westdale Theatre.
Movie Haven: The Westdale

1014 King St W, Hamilton

The day began with an insightful testimony from Arlene Dosen, Executive Director and Assistant Dean, Student Success, on her journey at McMaster and touched on the importance of student staff roles and professional development opportunities.

Executive Director and Assistant Dean of Student Success, Arlene Dosen, delivering her introductory remarks to students in attendance at this year’s conference.

Conference attendees then tuned into a presentation by Lisa Hunt, HR Strategic Partner, Housing and Conference Services, on ways to improve your resume. Students were able to then apply this knowledge to an activity by correcting a “bad resume” with their peers.

Lisa Hunt, HR Strategic Partner, Housing and Conference Services, sharing the best practices and common mistakes made on resumes.

The reflection activity allowed students to understand how they might experience real-life scenarios and develop their collaborative skills.

McMaster Student Staff completing a resume critique activity in reflection of the tips shared by Lisa from Housing and Conference Services.

In the afternoon, Jared Kunar, Career Development Advisor, moderated a panel of three recent graduates who are currently working at McMaster University: Kyla Beavers, a 2012 McMaster graduate and Human Resources Strategic Partner; Deebana Rasanathan, a 2024 McMaster graduate and Administrative Assistant, Academic; and Madeline Parr, a 2021 McMaster graduate and Communications Coordinator at the Student Wellness Centre. The panelists shared stories of the uncertainty of employment and ultimately what led them back to McMaster post-graduation.

Panelists Kyla Beavers, Deebana Rasanathan and Madeline Parr imparting their wisdom as McMaster alumni who now work at the university.

“I really hadn’t considered McMaster as an employer when I was a student here. I don’t know why. I think it’s maybe still overlooked in a lot of cases, but, when I was given the opportunity, it was really like an easy decision because it truly did feel like coming home after doing your undergrad here, living here, essentially growing up here.” said Kyla Beavers, a Human Resource Strategic Partner for Communications, Marketing, and Public Affairs (CPMA)

“I think everything happens for a reason that, you know, depending on where you are in your career, you know, just apply, see what happens. You know, it does get discouraging when you don’t hear back from employers. you know, whether you got an interview or don’t any interview. But I don’t want you guys to let that, discourage you from applying because something will transpire and it will work out for you.” Madeline Parr, Communications Coordinator at Student Wellness Centre

“Are there a lot of opportunities? Yes. Are they all going to be aligned with what you want to do and where you want your career to go? Maybe not, but the best thing about McMaster is that it’s all one employer, so there’s nothing stopping you from reaching out to that department or that faculty, they want to end up being in or you want a role that, you know, as part of their and asking questions.” Deebana Rasanathan, Administrative Assistant (Academic), Wilson College of Leadership and Civic Engagement

This year’s alumni panel offered useful advice to the student staff conference attendees. As students who are in anticipation of what will happen after graduation, these perspectives shed some light on the reality of searching for a job post-undergrad.

Attendees then took part in a LinkedIn session by RBC Future Launch, outlining the importance of the social media networking space and how to ensure your profile is attractive to prospective employers.

Finally, the day was rounded out by some much needed team building exercises that involved movement led by McMaster’s Altitude Team Development and Leadership program. It was the perfect ending to the day and created an unforgettable experience between student staff from all over campus.
