On campus

Teriyaki Experience: When walking through MUSC (the student centre) on your way to class, you may stop and wonder why there is such a large and inconvenient line taking up part of your path – it’s because Teriyaki Experience is back and open for business. This is always a solid and affordable option when you want to stay on campus to eat.

The Phoenix patio: If you have been on a campus tour it is likely that you have heard some sort of trivia fact about The Phoenix and its massive patio. They have really great food options, you must try the cauliflower wings and with its abundance of outdoor seating it definitely makes my list.

Off campus

Sushi shop on Main Street: It is not the cheapest deal for sushi but it makes up for it with its freshness, quality and convenience. They have a large menu with a bunch of specialty rolls. It is definitely a restaurant to visit.

Pancake House on Main Street: This restaurant right on Main Street has a very traditional diner atmosphere and is an excellent option in the morning for breakfast or brunch. They make delicious classic breakfast options and are extremely reasonably priced.

Subway on Main Street: Subway is a convienent, 24/7 food choice that is close to campus. It is good to be aware of this option as it will likely come in handy more than once in your undergraduate career.

Caribbean Flavah on Main Street: I love Caribbean food and Caribbean Flavah definitely meets and surpasses expectations when I am craving it. They are very close to campus on Main Street right off of the 403 highway. They have great portions, delicious food, and an amazingly priced lunch special. I definitely recommend checking it out if you love Caribbean food like me.

Boston Pizza on Main Street: I know it is a massive chain restaurant and not necessarily that exciting, however this can be a fun place to go with friends on their karaoke and trivia nights. They will often have deals on appetizers and specials during these events and this is probably the restaurant of choice for club executive member socials. I would also recommend joining a club!

Bread Bar on Locke Street: For those fun family visits when you just need a nice, close option Bread Bar on Locke Street works perfectly. It offers a nice sit-in experience with really tasty food, typically American faire, with a pleasant atmosphere.

Saigon House Restaurant on John Street: If you love Korean Barbecue or just love to eat, Saigon House Restaurant is a great place to go for an all you can eat option. It is a little bit further from campus in downtown Hamilton on John Street, but is very accessible by HRT (which Mac students ride for free with their presto). It is the closest option for this type of food and is always a great experience, especially with a group of friends.

Food places that accept student card off campus

Pita n’ More: This restaurant is definitely a primary contributor to me spending all of my flex dollars on my meal plan. If you love shawarma like I do, their shawarma plates are delicious. Not to mention it is extremely close to campus, is open fairly late, and accepts student cards – what a magical place.

Quick Chik: This restaurant is an amazing alternative to popeyes if you don’t feel like making the trek down Main Street towards Osler. This was my go-to place when I was craving a chicken sandwich in first year. Be wary of the fact that it does close early so if you have a late night craving, you might you have to wait until lunch the next day.

Bar Burrito: You can never go wrong with a good burrito bowl especially if you can pay for it using your student card. Only a 10-minute walk from campus, this remains my favourite burrito place to this day.

Learn more about Dr. Cadieux’s journey navigating post-secondary and now teaching at McMaster University.

Hey Marauders! Today’s topic is especially exciting to explore as I got the opportunity to interview a special guest. I would like to introduce Dr. Michelle Cadieux, a professor you will most likely be familiar with if you decide to take any of the IntroPsych courses. Learn more about Dr. Cadieux’s journey navigating post-secondary and now teaching at McMaster University.

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your background? How did you become interest in your field of study?

I’ve been a member of the MacIntroPsych Team for 10 years, but I’ve always been interested in psychology. From a very young age I wondered about how our brains worked and how we made choices. I knew this was the field for me during the introduction to Psychology courses in my first-year. They were by far my favourite and my best grades.

What inspired you to become an instructor? How did your journey lead you to where you are now?

Teaching wasn’t initially something I wanted to do. Like most science students, my plan was med school. About halfway through my undergrad, I realized that didn’t really interest me anymore and I became a little lost. During my fourth-year thesis, I discovered I really liked research, so I followed that path to graduate school. My Ph.D. supervisor, Dr. David Shore, was incredibly passionate about teaching. He helped me develop my presentation skills and near the end of grad school, I had a few sessional teaching gigs. I really enjoyed everything about it. I knew that whatever job became my career would need to have a teaching component.

How would you describe your teaching philosophy? What methods or approaches do you use to engage and inspire your students?

Lectures need to be informative, but they also need to be reasonably fun and entertaining. A little bit of humour goes a long way! When something is fun, students are more engaged, if they are more engaged, they learn more. Durable learning is the goal and an entertaining lecture stays with you more than a boring one.

What do you enjoy most about teaching? Is there a particular aspect of your job that brings you the most satisfaction?

I love being in front of a classroom, especially in the larger classes. When you are teaching a really good lecture and you can tell that everyone is listening and engaged, it’s just so rewarding. The energy of a big class that is not only learning, but also having a good time is amazing.

Can you share a personal challenge or obstacle you faced during your academic journey? How did you overcome it, and what did you learn from the experience?

Deciding what I really wanted to do with my life was very hard. I was so med school minded when I started that when I realized that wasn’t what I wanted anymore, I really struggled. Eventually I discovered new things I was interested and followed that path to where I am now, but when I think about all the different “plans” I had, it makes me laugh a little. I think I am currently living my “Plan E” at this point becayse Plan A through D did not work out, and to tell you the truth, I can’t picture myself being happier doing anything else. This taught me that the road to happiness and success is not a straight one and sometimes something not working out can be the absolute best thing in the world.

Can you recall what your transition from high school to university was like? What advice would you give students who may be struggling to adjust to university life?

I was a top performing student in high school. While I worked hard, everything just sort of came naturally to me and things generally worked out. In first year, I became surrounded by other high achievers, and I really struggled to keep up. My grades in first-year were okay, but in second-year, they were mediocre at best. To tell you the truth, I really didn’t know how to properly study or manage my time with my newfound freedom and much more extensive social life. I figured things out in my third-year, but it was a messy one. My advice would be to understand that university is fundamentally different than high school. The workload is larger, and the expectations are higher. A lot of the strategies I used in high school just didn’t work at this level. You need to be willing to let go of old habits and adapt to new requirements.

Are there any extracurricular activities or hobbies that you enjoy outside of your work as a professor?

I love to cook, read and play video games. I love to prepare a meal for others. Creating new recipes and seeing my family enjoy them is a real passion for me. When it comes to reading, I enjoy science fiction and fantasy novels. I read about a book a week and it really helps me relax at the end of the day. For video games, I own a Switch. Right now, I’m playing the new Zelda game (Tears of the Kingdom). I think I’ve logged over 150 hours at this point.

How do you stay connected with your students and build relationships with them outside of the lecture hall? Do you have any advice for students on how to approach their professors?

This can be harder for me since I teach such a large class. However, I always remember the students who regularly come to my office hours. I enjoy students who ask me questions that show they are really trying to understand the content on a deeper level. My advice would be, don’t be afraid of your professors. We really are here to help. We host office hours because we want to meet you. I know it can be intimidating, and that some of your professors will be more approachable than other, but just give it a try!

How do you continue to grow and learn as a professor?

I really try to stay connected to the other instructors and coordinators for the large science classes at McMaster. Just by knowing what they are doing and what they have tried, that either worked or didn’t work, is huge. I also love working with Dr. Joe Kim. Between the two of us, he really is the creative one. Keeping an open mind when he proposes an ambitious project is important. It helps keep the course fresh and exciting!

Signing off: Is there a piece of advice or life lesson that you would like to share with students? What is its significance to you?

It’s okay not to be perfect. When we are used to success it can be hard to accept failure. This is particular true for most McMaster students who were all pretty much high achievers at the high school level. Expecting a perfect transcript or to get every opportunity you apply for just isn’t realistic at this stage. I’m not staying that you shouldn’t strive for greatness or to achieve your dreams, but if you encounter challeges along the way, that’s okay. That’s life. It’s important to learn from your mistakes and move on to the next thing.

Move-in day

What really surprised me was how fast and organized move-in day was. There were so many students helping me carry my bag and making me feel welcomed. I received clear communication before which included things like my assigned day and time. If you are moving-in to residence, I would recommend to check your McMaster email regularly.

You moved in, so now what?

Checking out amenities

My residence was in McKay and once I unpacked and said my goodbye’s to my family, I checked out the amenities. Although, there are slight differences for each building some of the standard things include laundry rooms, study spaces, a recreation/music room, common rooms, kitchens, etc. Some residences will have shared washrooms with cleaning staff and others will have attached washrooms that are your responsibility to clean. For the most part, everything you need can be found in your residence and although it will be an adjustment from living at home, it is an amazing place to spend your first year.

Making friends

I was nervous about making friends at university and hoped being in residence would help. A lot of friends that I have to this day are people that I met in residence. To feel nervous about living in a new environment and socializing are valid. A great thing about residence is the community advisors who facilitate and organize various events/activities. If you have a roommate, I suggest reaching out to them prior to move-in day to help ease the transition of living together.

My number one piece of advice for making friends in residence is navigating outside your comfort zone and attending events with a positive attitude. Chances are the people around you are just as eager to meet a new friend.

Balancing residence and academic responsibilities

Once the initial excitement of the first few days settle down and you adjust to your classes, the comfortable rhythm of university life begins. As you navigate your academic responsibilities, your residence building can become your home away from home, providing a supportive environment where you can study, relax and connect with others. You may find yourself engaged in a wide range of activities and social opportunities within the residence community. Whether it’s a spontaneous game night in the common areas, impromptu study groups or casual conversations in the kitchens, there’s always something going on. However, sometimes it’s nice to get away from campus and relax in your own space.

Signing off

Living in residence, just like being in university, will be a new experience full of challenges and change. Everyone has their own unique experiences, however, I hope you are able to use some of the information and advice from my experience. Remember, you will find what works for you, so don’t be too hard on yourself and enjoy the process. Welcome to McMaster, Marauders!

Here are some strategies for university students looking to save money.

Easy and quick healthy recipes

Sometimes you don’t have the time to cook a meal in between studying and other plans, so the easiest option seems to be ordering in or getting fast food, but this can get expensive. Try some of these fun dishes that can be made in the microwave with a few simple ingredients.

Chicken Fajitas

Who doesn’t love a good chicken fajita, especially when you can make it quickly too!

What You’ll Need: Chicken tenders, red pepper, red onion, chili powder, corn tortillas, guacamole

Cut a quarter pound of chicken tenders, a red pepper, and half a red onion into thin slices and season with your choice of spices such as chili powder, oregano, salt and pepper. Use a microwave friendly container, you can never go wrong with a glass container, and place your veggies, followed by chicken and then cover with a lid. Microwave on high for 10 minutes.
Exploring Hamilton can be inexpensive, active and convenient. Make sure to always keep an eye out for deals on events/activities for McMaster students.

When entering the McMaster University Student Centre (MUSC), you can find a board near the main atrium that will often have deals on tickets for events going on in the city.

There are also several promotions offered by businesses specifically for McMaster students.

Also, when choosing transportation, opt for cheap/active options. There are many walkable attractions to see near campus, specifically great natural scenery. If you need to go further, you can rent city bikes on campus or your free HSR bus pass to take you anywhere you need.

Check Mosaic for more information about how to load your voucher on to your presto card. You can plan your trip using the City of Hamilton website. Let’s check out the many things you can do in Hamilton.

It can feel like just going to lectures is sufficient, but this is far from the truth. In high school, when teachers announced that there was a test next week, what would you do?
Lectures may be fast paced so something your high school teacher took a week to explain can be glossed over in 10 minutes by your professor.

Once you get your timetable for the year, you may notice that you have a 50-minute break in between your classes, and this can’t possibly be enough time to get done the work you planned to for the day.
If you planned to spend an hour reviewing concepts from your biology lecture earlier that day, why don’t you use the free time you have in between classes to get your revision in.

The work may seem significantly harder, and I remember already feeling behind after the first week of school. With the right strategies, you can ensure that you are instilling efficient study habits to maximize productivity. It is important to set goals, hold yourself accountable, introduce scheduling and understand the relevance of the content you are studying in the real world.

There are many great spots on campus for a variety of types of studying and it is important that you have the necessary information to select the place where you will be most comfortable and productive.

When you want to study alone:

Mid-term season, exam season, lab reports, and every in between, there are times when your workload gets heavy. You may be learning a tough concept or simply need a quiet place to focus and work. These are the perfect places for a silent and productive environment.

Mills Library

Mills library is perfectly situated at the centre of campus. There are many great options in Mills to find a place to study, but when you really need to focus, look no further than the 6th floor. This section is a large and entirely quiet area perfect for intense focus. Generally, everyone tends to be respectful of the silent zone rules.

Tip: When breaks are required there are food options nearby at MUSC.

When you want to study with friends/in larger groups:

Sometimes when studying you know you’re going to have to talk through problems, you may have to discuss roles in a project or just chatting with friends because that will allow you to enjoy studying more. For these instances, the quiet study is not the place for you.

I always recommend getting enough sleep and sticking to a functional sleep schedule. But I also realize that sometimes you may find yourself up late and need a place to study. Maybe you’re bored with your room, maybe your roommate is trying to sleep or whatever your reason is; if you find yourself looking for a study spot late at night make sure to consider these options.

To sum up, hopefully, this info helped a lot in detailing good study spots on campus and when might be the most opportune time to use them. Most importantly, however, is that you find a place where you are comfortable and somewhere where you will be the most productive. Try out the list, don’t be afraid to switch things up, and good luck with your academic endeavours.

Networking can be constant and overwhelming, but there are ways to easily implement building connections into your daily life. For instance, saying “hi” to the person sitting next to you in a lecture or engaging with your group mates during course projects. An especially important network is your professors and building connections with them. Taking risks can get you noticed by professors and even help you make friends in university.

Here are a few ways to build connections and take risks.

Ask for help

Asking for help may seem daunting as you are putting yourself in a vulnerable position. I used to view it as a risk of seeming inferior to my professors and peers. I never asked questions despite having many and attempted to devise my own solutions. It is good to be self-directed, but you should not shy away from asking questions.

You can ask your professor questions through office hours, allotted time slots for drop-ins or simply wait to speak to them at the end of lecture.

You may have heard the saying “there are no dumb questions” a countless number of times in all your years of schooling, but I just want to emphasize the truth behind this phrase. Professors encounter a wide variety of students with varying skill sets daily, and chances are, your question may not be not be as “dumb” as you may think.

Tip: Asking questions and interacting with your professor can help provide you with networking opportunities for future projects.

Expand your network

In first year, I refrained from networking with professors to seek out opportunities as I believed I was unqualified and did not want to waste their time. This was a misconception. It is never too early to start networking.

It helps you get a foot in the door for upper-year projects that may require Faculty supervisors such as independent research studies or even your fourth-year honours thesis project.

You are more likely to receive references that you need for a job or opportunities if you can familiarize yourself with your professor. Put a name to your face and let them know that you are here to learn.

Networking is ultimately a learning opportunity, whether it occurs through formally organized events or casual encounters. There is a lot to learn from people, and most people are willing to share their experiences and expertise. This process does not have to be intimidating and certainly should not be ingenuine.

Tip: The key is to have a genuine interest to connect with a specific person and share your reasons for wishing to connect with them. A genuine interest helps facilitate conversation that is interesting and effortless.

Redefine failure

Networking can occur through various outlets. One method of networking, while I was seeking out research opportunities, was emailing professors whose research interests aligned with my own. Sometimes, you may not receive the most favourable outcome such as joining a lab group or even receiving an email back, and that is completely okay!

Networking is a rewarding risk, and you cannot always expect to be granted opportunities but you can expect to always learn something. The most important takeaway is to be genuine and go into conversations with the intention to learn something new. You may be referred to a different professor or professional who may be able to provide you with another new and exciting opportunity.

Tip: Be concise in your emails to professors. Don’t be afraid to use bullet points to get your points across.

Signing off

Networking is an integral part of your university career, and it will likely begin the minute you step foot on campus. Everyone engages in networking whether they are aware of it or not. Take a chance to learn and connect with those around you. You can manifest exciting opportunities that will positively impact your university experience.
