SSC Academics: How to be a University Student
3:30 to 4:30 p.m.
What does it mean to be a “good” university student? In this session, you’ll learn about new research that uncovers how strong students create balance in their lives. You’ll also have the chance to reflect on your own strengths and weaknesses to help you strike this balance for yourself.
SSC Academics: Note-Taking
3:30 to 4:30 p.m.
This workshop will prepare you for university lectures by introducing a variety of effective note-taking strategies. With real examples you will learn how to actively listen for key points and summarize main ideas, preparing more meaningful and effective study notes. This session also includes a mock lecture by Dr. Rosa da Silva and Dr. Nikol Piskuric.
For students with disabilities, this session will cover information about learning strategies.
4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
For years Faculty Fusion has brought together students from all faculties in celebration of being united as McMaster University Students. Faculties will gather to learn each others’ oaths and participate in a massive cheer-off, filling Ron Joyce stadium. Here’s your chance to show your Faculty and McMaster pride!
SSC Academics: Reading Academic Articles and Textbooks
4:30 to 5:30 p.m.
Everyone says that university requires a lot of reading, but they don’t explain how you’re supposed to read. Textbooks and journal articles are dry and lengthy, so it can be difficult to stay focused! In this session, you’ll find out how to read actively and get the information you need from advanced texts.
SSC Academics: Thinking and Studying in University
4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
When professors are asking you to think critically, what do they mean? What, exactly, do they want you to do? In this workshop, we’ll use plain language to explain how to apply information, make connections between ideas, and evaluate objectively.
Off-Campus Students: Airbands Rally
6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Get your face painted, your voices warmed up, and get your blood pumping before the Airbands competition starts. Be sure to drop by and cheer on our Airbands team together!
8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
This exciting event is a Welcome Week favourite! Airbands gives first year students the chance to participate in the fun and watch faculty and campus groups compete for the title of the best Airband. Involved in this event is a whole lot of dancing, music, and cheering!
