  • Talking to people who work in the field can help you understand how your strengths will apply to the field and what skills and experience are needed to enter and succeed in the field. Use the resource Go Beyond Google and Career Conversations section of our website to support you with career exploration.

The next steps involve gathering detailed information about the programs and when ready, apply!

  • The Ontario Teacher Education Application Service can be a useful place to start. This website provides Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) program information, admissions requirements, and application process for most teacher education programs in Ontario.
  • A full listing of programs in Ontario can be found through the Ontario College of Teachers; the regulatory body that oversees the profession in Ontario.
  • Redeemer University and Tyndale University B.Ed. programs typically accept applications directly.
  • If you are interested in advanced research and teacher education, there are a few graduate level teacher education programs in Ontario. There are Master of Teaching programs offered through OISE/University of Toronto. These programs offer a concurrent way to obtain your teaching certification and graduate degree. Applications are typically submitted directly to the school.
  • Admission requirements depend on the grades you are looking to teach at the elementary and/or secondary school level.
  • Completing a 3- or 4-year undergraduate program is usually a requirement; many schools prefer a 4-year honours program with at least a B/B+ average. Requirements will vary for individual schools and programs, so be sure to check carefully.
  • Pre-requisite courses depend on the level you apply to teach.

There are three levels you can apply to with specific pre-requisites for each:

Primary/Junior (Grades K-6) 

  • No specific teachable subject needed, but some programs require applicants to have completed specific undergraduate courses, often one math, science, or English course. Others may give preference to those that have taken a variety of courses that align with curriculum subjects.

Junior/Intermediate (Grades 4-10) 

  • Requires indicating 1 teaching subject at the time of application – typically requires a concentration of courses in one subject and usually 3 “full” units/credits (which is usually equivalent to 18 units at McMaster).

Intermediate/Senior (Grades 7-12) 

  • Requires you to indicate 2 teaching subjects – typically the first subject requires at least 5 “full” units/credits of undergraduate courses (which is typically equivalent to 30 units at McMaster) and the second is usually 3 full units/credits (equivalent to 18 units at McMaster). Some programs require additional pre-requisites, so it’s best to review the program requirements.

Experience (paid or unpaid) in teaching, tutoring, leading children (ex. camp counsellor, coaching) or experience with the age group you are interested in is an important component for many programs. To understand what each school requires, you can review the Experience profile information on the TEAS site, which also has a link to each school’s own website for more details.

  • If you’re unsure if your undergraduate courses will count towards your teachable subject(s), it’s okay to contact the teacher education program’s admissions office; however, they may be limited on what they can tell you prior to assessing your submitted application. Some schools will provide a list of approved courses for questions that are common (i.e., statistics counting as math for P/J). If your circumstances are unique, contact the teacher education admissions office for guidance.
  • Be sure to check if there is a specific course(s) that is required for teaching subject (i.e., Canadian history as part of a history for I/S). You can find these on the TEAS site or on program websites.

Note deadlines:

  • Most Ontario schools have a deadline of December 1st for submitting your application to OUAC 

Review GPA requirements 

  • Most schools require a minimum “B” average, equivalent to 70%
  • Schools will calculate your GPA requirement in various ways. Most commonly, it will be based on the last 10 full undergraduate degree-level credits. Some ask for the “best” 10 full credits.

Complete an undergraduate degree

  • Depending on the school, a three-year general degree is sufficient, but preference is given to four-year honours undergraduate degrees 

Meet teachable subject requirements

  • Make sure that the school you are applying to has a program with the teachable you aim to pursue. The TEAS website is helpful in determining this. 
  • Ensure that you have enough courses completed for the teachable requirements or investigate course equivalent forms if the courses you took are not clearly aligned with the teachable. 
  • You may also need to have some requirements completed at the time of application while other program may allow those courses to be  in progress 

Gain teaching-related experience

  • For some programs and schools, teaching-related experiences account for a large portion of the admission decision.
  • You should generally aim to gain experience at the age level that you want to teach at and ideally in group settings. However, there are a range of experiences that you can consider for your experiential portion of the application.  
  • Consider volunteering or gaining experience through clubs, community groups, organizations or working with professors. Supports to help you can be found through Student Success Centre’s Experiential team.  
  • Get organized by creating a chart or spreadsheet with the varying academic and experiential requirements including GPA calculation, prerequisite courses, teachable subject requirements, experience profile requirements, etc.
  • If applying to programs outside TEAS application, like University of Toronto, Redeemer, Tyndale refer to their sites directly for detailed application and admission requirements.
  • Consider the deadline to apply though OUAC/TEAS application is often December 1st, therefore your final year grades will not be on your submitted transcript; this may impact how the GPA is calculated.
  • Carefully review the program websites for information on what to expect for supplemental applications so that you are clear on the requirements.
  • Statements vary by program but most often comprise of short answer questions about why you want to be a teacher, your experiences (work, volunteer, life) that have influenced and prepared you for the role and a question about equity and your experience working with diversity. Be insightful and use descriptive language to demonstrate your knowledge about teaching and learning.
  • Each program has different questions, and this is often the most time-consuming part of the application. Anticipate this and plan your time accordingly.
  • Refer to the Personal Statement guidelines for some general points about writing application material.
  • To qualify as a teacher in Ontario, you would need to transfer your qualifications gained through another province or country through the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT). 
  • There are teacher’s education programs offered in other countries that align with Ontario’s regulations.  You may be required to write an exam to transfer your qualifications.   
  • Consulting groups may be worth considering to help you with the process of going abroad for teacher’s education programs.  These include, but are not limited to: CanTeach, Across the Pond, Degrees Abroad, and OzTrekk.   
    • Some of these programs can help you get certified in the country that you will be studying in, as well as back in Ontario. 
    • Many teacher education programs in the United Kingdom are one year long, as opposed to two years in Canada, but you must be cautious in making sure that you will be qualified by the OCT back in Ontario. 
  • Note: As a McMaster student, you have access to GoinGlobal and My World Abroad which are resources that can provide information about cost of living, employment opportunities, and other essential needs for your time abroad

  • Be clear about the reference requirements for the program(s) you are intending to apply to as each program could have different expectations or processes.
  • Make your request early to give your reference adequate time. Aim to ask for a reference 2-3 months before the application deadline.
  • You can confirm their willingness and availability to be your reference as early as possible, especially, if you know that person to be highly sought after as a reference.
  • Be prepared to provide your reference with details about the program(s), reference due date, instructions for submitting the reference, and skills and competencies that will be important to highlight.
  • Remember to let them know your aspirations and why you are applying. They may ask you for a draft of your statement of intent or a resume to help them with personalizing their letter.
  • Timing is important. Some programs require you to complete your whole application before they will send your reference the form, so start your application early.

Types of references

Academic

  • Most common type
  • Includes professors who have taught and assessed you
  • Usually need 2-3
  • Does not include TA’s

Professional

  • Often required for professional grad programs (MBA, MSW, etc.)
  • Professionals who have managed your work and can attest to your suitability to pursue the career path

Clinical

  • Only required for select health programs
  • A health professional, ideally someone who you have worked alongside with clients

Who to ask?

  • Letters that are excellent will strengthen your application. Ask individuals who know you well and will speak highly of your abilities. Ask specifically if they can support your application with a “strong” reference letter.
  • Choose a professor with whom you have achieved a good grade. A ‘good grade’ would be regarded as the grade the university requires for admission within the program. If a program requires a B+, try to ask a professor from a class in which you have achieved at least that grade.
  • Feeling nervous? Remember professors want to support their students with their academic goals.

Before approaching your references

  • Every program has different methods of requesting a letter. Know if it will be an electronic reference (most common) or hard copy letter, when they will receive it and the deadline.
  • Use a 2-staged approach: Email to introduce a request for a reference and then arrange a meeting. You could visit office hours or ask for a meeting to discuss grad school applications.
  • Make sure you understand the qualifications/qualities needed in the program and share that with your reference so they can speak to those qualities.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How can I get recognized within my class?

  • Start early! Get to know your professors before it is time to ask for a reference- the earlier the better!
  • Attend classes regularly and sit in the front! Ask and answer questions in class. The discussion board on Avenue is also a great way to engage in classroom discussions.
  • Go to office hours prepared with thoughtful questions is a good way to show that you understand class material.

What is the best way to get to know my professors?

  • Don’t be afraid to talk to your professor about topics not related to classroom material. This could even involve talking to your professor about possible career opportunities within your field of study.
  • Ask about their research. Professors love to talk about their research, especially if you have read any of it and have questions on it. This is a great way to stand out and get noticed!
  • Consider trying to get volunteer or summer research positions or look for teaching assistant roles – something about how to build relationships with professors outside of the classroom.
  • Get involved with student run faculty societies that might have close connections with faculty members.

Does my academic reference need to be from a subject area that aligns with my grad school application?

  • The best reference is usually from the person who know you best. If that happens to be someone who is relevant to the program you are applying to, even better.
  • Some programs may have specific requirements about who can support your application as a referee. Be sure to review and understand the referee requirements before you begin your application.

How do I make the decision about who to ask for a reference?

  • Consider the most relevant and the most recent options, but prioritize those who can speak well about your academic or professional abilities for the program.

What if I don’t have any academic references?

  • If you graduated more than 5 years ago, contact the program that you’re intending to apply to and inquire if there are alternative references that would be accepted.
  • If you graduated less than 5yrs ago, start reaching out and reconnecting with professors. Help them remember you by sending samples and your LinkedIn URL so they can view your picture.
  • If that is not possible, take a university class (level 3 or 4) and build a relationship with professor. Let them know your interest in grad school. Allow them time to familiarize themselves with your academic abilities.

What if my reference says “no”?

  • Though disappointing, there could be many reasons for this, e.g. lack of time, already writing many reference letters, insufficient knowledge of you and your abilities.
  • Gracefully ask for feedback or move on to another professor. This may be a blessing in disguise, because you only want strong letters of support.

Should I let my references know if I get into the program?

  • Yes! Update your references to let them know the result, either way. If you didn’t get admitted, thank them for their support. If appropriate, let them know your plans for next steps and stay connected.

This is intended as a guide only. Customize the content to reflect your personal situation.

Dear Professor (insert name),

I enjoyed and benefitted from the classes (be specific and insert the classes / year / grade you received) that I took with you during my degree at McMaster. I am very interested and motivated to further my education in the field by pursuing a (be specific- name the program(s) to which you are applying and the institution(s) ). I would like to research (specify your research interest) further as I prepare for a career in (specify your career interest).

I was hoping that you would be willing to support my application by writing a strong recommendation letter to support my candidacy. To assist you with your decision, I have included a summary sheet that lists my key papers including my senior thesis. I have also attached my resume, which will bring you up to date about some of my accomplishments outside the classroom.

  • We encourage you to check each program you are applying to for their specific guidelines and suggestions.
  • Check carefully for instructions, such as questions or prompts to address. Some instructions can be vague whereas others have prompts and some may have specific questions to address.
  • Note the page, word or character limit. When in doubt ask the program’s admissions.
  • Take some time to reflect on your reasons for applying and give yourself ample time for the writing process. Plan for a few drafts before your final version.
  • Ensure you have thoroughly researched the program and school, including courses, instructors, their areas of research, program values, and any information on their website such as descriptions and tips.

Starting to write

  • Brainstorm and bullet point your thoughts. Try a mind map if you are more visual.
  • The first paragraph can be the hardest to write – you can leave this for now and come back to it once you know more of your content.
  • Try not to write to the limit when you are drafting your statement. This can lead to trying to fit it all in a limited space without allowing you to give depth of thought and insights. It’s ok to be over the limit when you are in the process of writing out your thoughts and once you have drafted a version or two, you can go back and refine your writing, trimming as needed to adjust to the length.
  • Tip: Add the prompt to your document to guide you, and colour code the prompts. Read your document and highlight in the corresponding colour to ensure you have addressed each prompt. This will visually give you a sense of how much emphasis you gave to each and can adjust as needed. Remove it later before submitting.
  • If you are feeling stuck, book a Writing Assistant appointment on OSCARplus under Academic Skills.

Finalizing your statement

  • Read through for flow, ensure you have addressed the content, and have provided insightful reflections or details about research interests for letters of intent.
  • Have someone read it over – a friend, family member, professor or book an appointment with the SSC careers team on OSCARplus.

Good applications are:

  • Well Researched: Have a strong understanding of the program of yourself to demonstrate your motivation and preparation
  • Insightful: Description is not enough. Ask yourself questions to get to a level of insight expected.
  • Credible: Your statements are backed up with evidence.Provide examples, evidence, stories.
  • Specific: Include enough details so the readers get a picture of the situation or experience.
  • Precise: Well articulated and efficient with words. Review and fine tune your writing
  • Well-written: It doesn’t have to be fancy, just well written, and should be well organized, easy to follow and engaging to read.
  • Personal: Give the committee a glimpse into the person you are and/or your interests motivations

Note about Using Generative AI

  • Writing can be tricky, but avoid the tempatation to use AI tools to write your statement for you. AI writing can sound generic and unauthentic – two elements that don’t make for a good application!

  • Using reliable career information databases and talking to people in the field can help you understand how you might bring your strengths to the field and what is required to enter and succeed in the field.

The next steps, broadly speaking, are to then gather detail information about the programs and when ready, apply!    

  • Ontario has a central application system (OLSAS) where you can find out more about the Ontario law programs, the application requirements and submit your applications to Ontario law schools. This is the primary source of information for law schools in Ontario.
  • For law programs outside of Ontario, you will apply directly to individual schools. Please refer to the Federation of Law Societies of Canada for a listing of accredited law schools across Canada.
  • Another useful resource to consult is the Council of Canadian Law Deans for a list of law schools in Canada and links to each of their websites for further information.

Law schools are regulated, meaning that all programs must be accredited by the Federation of Law Societies of Canada, and there are a range of program options:

  • J.D (Juris Doctor) degree is completed as a postgraduate degree. Most programs in Ontario are J.D.   
  • L.L.B (Bachelor of Laws) is a professional/law degree seen more commonly outside of Canada. In Canada, a J.D degree is normally required to practice law.
  • Joint Program: This type of program combines a law degree with another postgraduate degree such as a Masters or PhD. You will need to apply and be admitted to each program separately.  
  • Dual Program: This program allows students to obtain two law degrees which will enable them to practice law in both the United States and Canada. Learn more about Dual programs here. 

If you study outside of the province, be sure to check the requirements to be eligible to practice in Ontario/other provinces.  

Ensure that you review the national coordinating bodies applicable in Canada. Information can be found on The Federation of Law Societies of Canada.  

Be aware that Ontario requires applicants to complete the Barrister Licensing Examination and the Solicitor Licensing Examination. After you complete this, you are required to complete Experiential Training that is usually done through a Law Practice Program (LLP) or Articling Program The Law Society of Ontario also requires the completion of the Good Character Requirement.  

Some law schools have Access streams to encourage applications from traditionally under-represented and equity-deserving applicants. You can learn more about these types of application streams on OUAC or directly on the school’s website.

  • Review the OUAC OLSAS website for instructions on how to apply to Ontario Law Schools.
  • Make a list of schools that you are interested in and make note of deadlines and requirements.
  • You will require an undergraduate degree.
    • The requirement is usually for degrees that are 3 more years in any field and from a recognized university.
  • You will need to write the Law School Admissions Test (LSAT).
    • Some schools accept the highest grade of the LSAT. More information on the test can be found later in this tip sheet.
  • Check each school’s GPA requirements.
    • Generally, schools require a cumulative GPA minimum of an “A-”, but some schools consider your application more holistically. Refer to each school’s requirements and confirm how they calculate the GPA. OLSAS uses a 4.0 scale and you can use this Grade Conversion Table to convert your marks.
  • You will need to arrange for reference letters.
    • The number and type of referees varies amongst schools. The general requirement is at least one academic reference.
  • Review the How to Ask for Grad School References tip sheet to learn more about asking for references.
  • Typically, schools will expect you to have developed skills and competencies that will prepare you for the legal profession.
  • Part of the application will require a written submission. The format can vary and it is part of the application where you can write about your background and motivations for pursuing law school. This typically takes more time than you might think.
  • Be mindful of deadlines. Make sure to write them down and give yourself enough time to prepare your application thoroughly.
  • The Law School Admissions Council (LSAC) administers the LSAT exam; this is where you would register and find many useful resources including a comprehensive FAQ section.  
  • You may choose to self-study using resources found online or enroll in a prep course.  The decision is up to you, based on how you learn best (structured or self-directed).    
  • Common prep courses include: The Princeton Review, Oxford Seminars and Kaplan. There is a free prep course to help you prepare for the LSAT.
  • To login to your OLSAS account, you will need the same login information that you used for your OUAC account. You may have to set up a new account if your OUAC account is more than 5 years old.  
  • Each school has varying requirements; it can be helpful to utilize a strategy or platform to keep all the components of your application organized. Some examples of helpful platforms are Microsoft Planner, Trello, etc.
  • The deadline to apply for Ontario programs is usually November 1st, therefore if you are a current student, your final year grades will not be on your submitted transcript. Some schools may allow an ‘end of term’ transcript to be added to your application, but this will include only Fall term grades.
  • If you have any supporting documentation to add to your application, such as Access documentation etc. you need to add it under the Secure Applicant Messaging section.
  • Ask your referees if they will provide you with a strong and positive reference before you enter their information on OLSAS. Ask them what their preference is, online or paper according to OLSAS guidelines. Make sure to contact your referees at least 4 weeks in advance of the deadline to give them adequate time to write a letter. Ensure that your referees are aware of the application deadlines.
  • If you have any questions about the application, use the “Help” button at the top of each application page to access more information about requirements for that section of the application.
  • Most common options include those within the commonwealth countries.
  • The National Committee of Accreditation (NCA) has helpful resources and information when considering studying internationally.
  • Education Consulting firms can be a helpful resource to learn more about going abroad for law programs. abroad for law programs. These include, but are not limited to: Across the Pond, Canada Law From Abroad, Degrees Abroad, and OzTrekk or KOM
  • If you complete your law degree outside of Canada, you will have to apply to the National Committee on Accreditation (NCA) for an assessment of the equivalency of the degree to a Canadian law degree. For more information on this process, is listed on the NCA Applicants page on the OLSAS website.
  • You may be required to write an exam to transfer your qualifications, find a Canadian articling position and take extra courses when your international degree is assessed.

The major focus of a CV is on credentials including education publications, abstracts, academic achievements, research, fellowships, internships, and residencies.

Your CV may closely resemble a resume if you have not yet amassed those types of experiences. Focus on elaborating on your education, if relevant, by describing major project(s), research paper(s) or brief description of relevant learning from courses.  

What is the difference between a resume and a CV?

The primary differences between a CV and a resume are length, content and purpose.

A Resume

  • Demonstrates ‘fit’ and ‘competence’ for a position/organization
  • The more relevant you are, the better ‘fit’ and more ‘competent’ you are 
  • Typically used outside of academic or research roles  
  • Includes summary of your skills, education, and experience written to market the qualifications required for a specific position 
  • One or two page page limit 
  • Goal of the resume is to be brief and concise 

A CV

  • Demonstrates expertise established through experience over time 
  • The more you’ve done, the greater expertise you have
  • Typically used where experience in academia and/or research is most valued  
  • Includes comprehensive listing of your accomplishments and experiences
  • No page limit

What do I include in my CV?

The categories in a CV are organized to highlight skills and experiences that are most relevant to the position you are seeking. There can be particular conventions for different faculties, so ensure you obtain advice from those in your field.  For example, if you are applying for a research position, you should list your Research Experiences and Research Interests first.

Common CV Category Headings 

Personal Data 

  • Name, Address, Telephone Number, Work Phone Number, Email Address, LinkedIn public URL and URL for your personal website (optional) 

Educational Background 

  • Usually listed first; includes complete post-secondary academic history 
  • List in reverse chronological order 
  • Name of institution & degree (if you have not completed your program, indicate expected graduation date or the status of dissertation) 
  • Include minors and/or secondary fields of specialization 

Thesis 

  • Brief synopsis- a few typed lines, or append a one page abstract in which you describe your dissertation and indicate how it contributes to the field. Indicate name of supervisor

Coursework 

  • Provide any relevant coursework titles, with brief description so the reader has a clear indication that course content is congruent with role or program requirements 
  • Do not include course numbers or abbreviations as they are institution specific
  • List all courses in groups that support and strengthen your professional/ career objectives

Scholarships, Academic Awards, Research Grants 

  • Focus on presenting yourself as a ‘fundable entity’. If you have several, put them on the first page of your CV. List from most current to least current awards and include a brief description of why it was awarded, if relevant

Teaching Experience 

  • Brief description of courses taught, teaching responsibilities, dates, and awards
  • Include course title, Department, Institution, your Position Title, date(s)

Teaching Interests (optional) 

  • Areas in which you are qualified to teach undergraduate and graduate courses, as well as areas in which you are able to teach introductory or junior- level courses

Research / Laboratory Experience 

  • Be as specific and precise as possible regarding the description of your research interests.  Relate experiences to the area you are applying.
  • Include your Role, Institution (Location), Supervisor, Project Information, Relevant Research Techniques
  • Include associates, supervisors, (optional) and dates

Research Interests (optional) 

  • Include your interests as relevant to your target audience 

Laboratory Skills / Technical Skills

  • Describe the relevant technical skills and equipment you have used

Publications 

  • Articles, books and chapters of books written and edited. Cite all authors as they appear in publications
  • Include journal abbreviations, volume number, inclusive title page numbers and date of publication; indicate if the journal is refereed
  • State whether you are the primary, secondary or joint author and use a citation format that is usually accepted within your discipline (APA, MLA, etc.)
  • If you have several publications, consider using Sub Headings to clarify: Peer Reviewed; Works in Press, Works in Progress; Editorial, Journal Reviews

Presentation (Papers) and Lectures

  • Describe specialized skills – interpersonal, leadership or analytical, as well as their applications and the contexts in which you have used them e.g., quantitative/qualitative research skills, computer-related skills etc.

  • List any memberships in organizations/ associations (past and present)

  • Include volunteer work, committee memberships, etc.

  • Include extended international travel as a result of academic study or community work abroad

These interviews may be conducted in person or online. The number of stations, duration, types of activities can vary (writing, role plays, group interactions, direct question, etc.). The time frame for each mini-interview station typically ranges from 5-10 minutes.

Preparing for multiple mini interviews

  • Gather information about the program via their website, talking to students or former students who have attended the program, and/or attending the school’s information sessions.
  • Gather information about the core competencies and skills required of the profession to gain a stronger understanding of what types of skills or attributes that might be evaluated in the interview.
  • Carefully read your interview invitation for specific instructions related to your interview.
  • Reflect upon how your past experiences demonstrate the characteristics and skills required of the profession and the program.
  • Develop a “qualifications chart”: In one column list the skills/characteristics expected/required and in another column list your corresponding “stories”, experiences, and examples of when you have illustrated those skills/characteristics.
  • Thinking about your “stories” with a Situation, Task, Action, Result approach helps you to organize your story for the listener. Think critically and introspectively about how you reacted, behaved, felt, and thought to gain greater consciousness of how you might then respond in a possible scenario or role play.
  • This step will help to increase your self-awareness and prepares you to talk about yourself.
  • Getting honest and constructive feedback from others on our strengths, weaknesses, communication style, and “first impressions” is helpful for developing greater self-awareness.
  • Understanding how others perceive your approach or perspective can help you to respond more intentionally during the MMI scenarios.
  • Get informed on current issues relevant to the profession you are applying – e.g., multi-disciplinary teams, changing roles, health care system, patient rights, etc.
  • Practice articulating your reasoning and decision-making process in your response to ethical scenarios.

To help you keep on track to give a comprehensive answer, consider these sample formats. Adapt them to find a structure to your responses that works for you.

Sample 1

1:  Summary: provide a brief summary about your understanding of the question

2:  Identify the Key Issue(s): Explain the issues and/or major dilemma involved.

3: Seek More Information: When the information is limited in the question, define the context of the situation to demonstrate that you stay open-minded, can discuss the answer from other perspectives and identify missing information.

4:  Action: Think aloud to show your critical thinking skills. Assess the possible courses of action and explain the pros and cons of each. Explain your preference.

5:  Take Initiative: Try and come up with practical suggestions to prevent the issue in the future. i.e. propose changes including policies, procedures, planning etc.

  • First, it is important to be clear about your intentions – why do you want to pursue medical school abroad? Is there something about the training abroad that will help you achieve your goals? Are you confident in your decision to pursue a career as a medical doctor?
  • Reflecting on yourself and your motivations is an important first step.
  • Exploring the medical programs and the medical profession in the country you are considering will be important. Use reliable career and education sources and consider networking with medical professionals who have studied abroad and returned to Canada to work as a medical doctor.
  • Gathering detailed information about the programs, develop a plan, and if this is your informed choice, then apply!
  • In The United States, the application process is centralized through American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS) . The AMCAS site is a wealth of information about schools, applications, fees, application tips and costs.  
  • The Atlantic Bridge Program outlines several schools in Ireland that have Medical Schools and is a good source to explore programs, learn about application requirements and obtain contact information for each school.
  • For programs in Australia, OzTrekk is an education consultancy organization that provides information, guidance and application support for Australian Medical Schools.
  • For programs in the United Kingdom, KOM and Across the Pond are education consultants that help with exploring programs, understanding entry requirements, and navigating the application process.
  • For programs in other countries, including the Caribbean, you can refer to the LCME Directory of Accredited Medical Education Programs for more information.

Note: The organizations and resources listed above are provided as recommendations for exploration only. We do not endorse any specific consultant, program, or pathway.

  • Be sure the Medical Education (i.e. MD program) and MD Graduate Education (Residency) are accredited.  
  • Research pathways to License Registration if you intend on returning to Ontario to practice Medicine. HealthForce Ontario is an organization that supports internationally educated health professionals transition to work in Ontario. They are a useful source to learn about license registration and processes.
  • Understand Medical Residency training (Graduate Medical Education) requirements in the country you intend to complete residency. In Canada, there can be limited residency spaces for internationally educated medical graduates and some specializations have fewer residency spots than others, making it even more competitive. The Canadian Resident Matching Service (CaRMS) provides some information about the matching process in Canada and realistic data about internationally trained applicants.  
  • If you plan to complete your residency training abroad, be sure to thoroughly understand the licensing expectations in Canada and contact an advisor at HealthForce Ontario to ensure you are aware of the timelines (it may take 1-2 years), application requirements, and other considerations.  
  • Be realistic about the financial costs of international tuition fees, exchange rate differences, travel and living costs as these costs can be significantly higher than in Canada. For example, studying Medicine in the USA can be up to 5X higher than in Canada.
  • With over 150 medical schools in the U.S., there are more options, however, not all schools accept international applicants. Approximately 1/3 of U.S. medical schools consider Canadian applicants.
  • Due to the number of schools in the U.S., you might find many schools that accept MCAT and cGPA scores lower than what is typical of Canadian medical schools.
  • Most U.S. medical schools require personal statements and secondary essay questions which can be very time consuming so consider being selective if considering U.S. schools. Note that many schools value shadowing and clinical experience.
  • Most U.S. medical schools require multiple prerequisite courses, so researching schools early in your undergraduate program will help you plan to include these requirements. Check admissions deadlines and requirements as certain academic prerequisites will need to be completed by January or April of the year the application is submitted.
  • There can be “rolling” admissions which means the applications will be reviewed as they are received. The application period typically ranges from May – November.
  • There are secondary applications you will need to complete a couple weeks after initial application submission. The secondary application highlights the characteristics that would make you a great doctor. Think about how you can add value to the medical system and what makes you a good candidate.
  • To practice medicine in Canada, you will need to be licensed in Canada. To learn about the licensing process in Ontario, refer directly to College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.
  • Residency matching is a competitive process, and U.S. residency programs tend to prefer U.S. citizens, while Canadian residency programs tend to prefer individuals who have completed their medical studies through Canadian institutions.
  • For residency placements in the U.S., you will likely need working visa documents. Refer to the American Medical Association to learn more about legal requirements for medical residency programs and practicing medicine in the U.S.
  • In the U.S., there is also the option to complete a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree. Discover what a DO is, and if it is the right path for you.
  • There are many career possibilities for everyone, and fulfilling careers tend to evolve through being open to new opportunities, exploring interests, taking risks, and being flexibile. When thinking about other career possibilities, it can be helpful to think of them as alternative Plan A’s.

  1. Research the school and program
    • Understand what the school/program is looking for. Know the values of the school/program and qualities of candidates they are seeking.
  2. Research the profession
    • Understand what skills and experiences are valued.
    • Talk to alumni, attend information sessions, conduct informational interviews and use LinkedIn to see what people who graduated from that program are doing now.
    • If it’s a professional program, research the core competencies required for the profession and this information can often be found by checking professional association websites.
  3. Review and reflect on your past experiences (academic, work, volunteer, personal) 
    • Consider what you want the admissions committee to know about you by the end of the interview. Review your application documents that you submitted.
    • Identify relevant experiences from your accomplishments, paid and volunteer work, extracurricular, leadership roles, education and research to demonstrate your suitability for program: 
      • What strengths and skills do you bring? 
      • Why do you want to pursue this program and/or career path? 
      • What are your relevant interests (research, personal)? 
      • Reflect upon how your past experiences demonstrate the characteristics and skills required of the profession and the program. 
    • These reflection questions will help to increase your self-awareness and prepares you to talk about yourself. 
  4. Prepare and practice your responses
    • Identify question themes by researching the program and profession.  
    • Develop a “qualifications chart” by creating one column of list the skills, characteristics expected, required and another column listing your corresponding “stories”, experiences, examples of when you have illustrated those skills/characteristics.  
    • Thinking about your “stories” with a STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) approach can help you to organize your story for the interviewers.
      • Situation: Briefly outline the circumstances 
      • Task: Indicate any obstacles you faced 
      • Action: Describe the steps you took to solve this issue 
      • Result: Share the results of your actions and what you learned from the experience (often forgotten but the most important part) 
    • Practice your answers to gain more confidence and to sound more natural when talking about your experiences. McMaster students and alumni have access to Big Interview as a resource to help you practice.  
  5. Get feedback from others 
    • Receiving honest and constructive feedback from others on our strengths, weakness, communication style and “first impressions” is helpful for developing greater self-awareness.  
    • Understanding how others perceive your approach or perspective can help you to respond more intentionally to interview questions, making your answers clearer and more aligned with what interviews are looking for.

During the interview 

  • Understand the question before answering, ask for clarification if needed. 
  • Take your time to answer and don’t rush your response. 
  • If applicable, recognize the ethical principles in the scenario. 
  • Show your decision-making process in your response. 
  • If the interview format warrants it, be ready with 2-3 thoughtful and relevant questions that are phrased to encourage dialogue with the interviewer(s).

The waiting period 

  • Continue conducting informational interviews with people working in the field to gain insights, build connections, and stay engaged in your career development. 
  • Continue to develop back up options by exploring alternative programs, roles, or pathways in case this opportunity doesn’t work out.

First, it is important to be clear about your intentions. Why do you want to pursue medical school? Do you have a sense of your strengths and interests related to this field?

  • Reflecting on yourself is an important first step. Try not to feel pressured by friends, family or what peers are doing or saying. Set realistic and attainable goals for yourself, as applying to medical school is a very important decision which requires time and dedication. The Student Success Centre has career counselling supports for all undergraduate students from all faculties.
  • Exploring the medical profession can help you get a real sense of the career field and the education path. Using reliable career information databases and talking to people in the field can help you understand how you might bring your strengths to the field and what is required to enter and succeed in the field. To help you learn about the profession, the Go Beyond Google and Career Conversations section of our website has resources to support you with this.
  • Gather detailed information about each program and school. There is no shortcut for this, it requires time to review each program and school’s guidelines, descriptions, and application procedures. Take careful notes for yourself to stay organized and refer back to throughout the application process.
  • When ready – Apply! The time it takes to apply varies for each person. Give yourself enough time to complete your application(s) based on what works best for your time and schedule.
  • In Ontario, the application process is centralized through OMSAS and for other Canadian Universities you apply to each school separately. 
  • Try not to get overwhelmed by all the specifics of the application process prematurely, however if you have decided to aim for medical school it is important to know what is needed. Attend Medical School information sessions to get first hand understanding of the programs and selection criteria and understand the competencies required for the profession.
  • Admissions requirements vary for each school, including prerequisite undergraduate courses, if any, so be sure to investigate each school directly before making undergraduate decisions. Don’t assume.  
  • If schools do require prerequisite courses, in general they request a combination of life sciences, humanities and social sciences. If you are considering medical school abroad, you might find more academic requirements than what is typical for Canadian Medical Schools. 
  • Academic standing is a very important factor in this highly competitive application process. To remain competitive, make sure you have consistently high grades. A’s (10’s, 11’s and 12’s on McMaster’s 12-point scale). But each Ontario Medical School has a different formula for calculating their admissions GPA consideration.   
  • As you work on building yourself as a strong academic student, also ensure you are developing skills and competencies outside of the classroom. Consider volunteering, extra-curriculars, and employment opportunities to start to build competencies for the profession. Review the CanMed Roles as a guide, it outlines the roles that physicians take on, such as: Medical Expert, Communicator, Collaborator, Leader, Health Advocate, Scholar and Professional. 
  • References are an important consideration in the application process. Build relationships with work and volunteer supervisors, course instructors, and research supervisors etc.  
  • Most schools will require the MCAT as part of their admissions selection process. Learn about the MCAT and get familiar with registration dates and test offering dates to plan when the best time is for you to prepare for and take the MCAT.  
  • The costs for MCAT, applications, travel for interviews, tuition fees, etc. add up, so be sure to factor in costs as part of your consideration.  
  • There are access streams for some schools which provide equity deserving opportunity for under-represented groups. This might also include support for costs/fees.  

Review the OMSAS website on how to apply to Ontario Medical Schools 

Make a list of schools that you are interested in and make note of deadlines and requirements.  

Write down important dates and deadlines and give yourself enough time to prepare all components of your application.  

 You will require an undergraduate degree in any field

  • The requirement is 3 years of undergraduate education or Honours degree, depending on the school.  
  • Some schools might require you to take certain prerequisite courses in various fields. Ensure that you are checking the OMSAS website, as well as each program’s requirements individually. 

Supplemental Questions and CASPer 

  • These may involve short answers, short essays, or the CASPer which are meant to determine your suitability for the medical program. Writing short essays or responding to supplemental questions are often the most time-consuming part of the application process. It is important to make the time to be thoughtful and articulate with your responses.  

Check each school’s GPA requirements 

  • Review how OMSAS calculates your GPA to avoid confusion. 
  • Be sure to check how each school evaluates your marks, they can differ.  

You will need to write and release scores of the MCAT to OMSAS

Programs will require letters of reference 

  • For Ontario programs, you will need up to 3 references.  The requirement listed on the OMSAS website is one academic or employment-related referee, one non-academic referee and one referee of your choosing

Sketch/Verifier Requirements  

  • The Autobiographical Sketch (ABS) is a detailed and comprehensive list of your activities since age 16, within the following categories: employment, volunteer activities, extracurricular activities, awards and accomplishments, research and other. 
  • Keep in mind that for each of these activities you must have a verifier, which is a record of names, addresses, telephone numbers and email addresses of contacts that can verify your involvement in that activity. 
  • Consider volunteering or gaining experience through clubs, community groups, organizations or working with professors. Supports to help you can be found through Student Success Centre’s Experiential team.  

Review the transcript requirements that OMSAS and each school individually states

  • Many medical schools require their applicants to write the MCAT, a standardized exam covering four sections:  
    • Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems  
    • Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems 
    • Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behavior; and 
    • Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills. 
  • You can find an overview of each of the sections on the AAMC website 
  • Almost all U.S. medical schools and many Canadian schools require you to submit MCAT exam scores. Many schools do not accept MCAT exam scores that are more than three years old.  
  • Plan accordingly to write it at least 3 weeks before the admissions deadline so you can meet the OMSAS deadline for MCAT scores to be released 
  • Some students prefer self-studying from textbooks while others have more success taking a preparatory course (Ex. Oxford Seminars, Kaplan, Princeton). The AAMC provides some free planning and study resources. Khan Academy also provides a free online self-study guide  
  • While information surrounding the success of preparing for the CASPer test is varied, it is recommended that you start practicing early and get familiar with the structure of the test 
  • Knowledge in the variety of topics and issues affecting the Canadian health care system will not only help you in interviews, but also make you a more knowledgeable applicant. Get to know Public Health in Canada and follow Health related news.  
  • Consider the timing that is best for you. Many students will apply after they have completed their undergraduate degree so they can apply with a stronger application, or wait until they are personally ready (financially, or otherwise).  
  • Be strategic with which schools/programs you are a stronger candidate. Understanding how each program varies with their application requirements can help you be effective in your applications.  
  • Be sure to research access streams and understand the support each program offers for student accommodation. 

 

  • Some students choose to apply to International medical schools in the United States, the Caribbean and beyond, to increase their chances of being accepted 
  • A principal concern for students studying abroad with plans of returning to Canada should be securing a residency placement in Canada upon graduation from medical school. These residency spots are competitive for International students, so it is very important to conduct extensive research if you are considering studying medicine abroad.

  • Medical school acceptances are very competitive, and it’s a good idea to consider alternate options.
