Final-year students and new grads, we’re here to help you confidently enter the next phase in your career and transition to the workforce. Throughout the year, our career and employment team offers programs and resources designed to explore your options, learn about different industries, network with experienced professionals, connect with companies and get hired. 

Every year, we work with companies that are ready to hire McMaster students. This happens during the fall recruitment cycle, where they attend career fairs, hold company info sessions and post job openings. Check out the rough schedule of the typical recruitment cycle. We’re here to help you prepare and make the most of it.

  • September to December: Company information sessions take place. Check OSCARplus (Student Success Centre > Events) for details and registration. 
  • September: Application periods for some positions start to close. However, there are more opportunities throughout the year, so check back often. Visit OSCARplus > Student Success Centre > Employment > Job Postings. Search for “final-year recruitment positions.” And make sure to check out our annual Fall Career Fair.
  • October: Companies start interviewing candidates. 
  • November and December: Employers send offers to successful candidates.

This mock career fair is designed to help you develop confidence and get practice for the real thing. Shuttle Bus Schedule

Shuttle buses will leave from McMaster and Mohawk campuses hourly.

Bus #1: McMaster University Shuttle

  • Bus pickups at McMaster University (1280 Main St. W) will be on Forsyth Ave., beside Ivor Wynne Centre (IWC). Look for the yellow school bus and shuttle bus staff.
  • The first pickup is scheduled for 9:30 a.m.
  • Pickups will run every hour: 9:30am, 10:30am, 11:30am, Break, 12:15pm, 1:15pm, 2:15pm
  • Students will be driven to the Hamilton Convention Centre.
  • Returns trips will run: 10:00am, 11:00am, 12:00pm, break 12:45pm, 1:45pm, 2:45 pm.
  • The final return trip from the Hamilton Convention Centre will take place at 3:15 p.m.

All job seekers must register in advance to attend the fair.

Please bring your student or alumni ID card from your school. Admission is free for students/alumni from a degree/diploma program at McMaster University, Redeemer University and Mohawk College.

Members of the public are welcome at the fair from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and are not required to bring a piece of ID.

 

What is a job fair? Why should I attend?

A job fair is an event that connects job seekers with hiring employers. This year, Connect to Careers features employers who are hiring 3,000+ full-time, contract, summer, part-time or co-op positions that start within six months of the fair. 

Even if you’re not actively searching and applying for jobs, attending a job fair is a great way to network, learn about different industries and discover potential opportunities that align with your career plans. 

Who can attend Connect to Careers? 

The fair is open to students and alumni from McMaster University, Mohawk College and Redeemer University. Members from the local Hamilton community are welcome from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. 

How do I register?

Please note: Advanced registration is required to attend. Students and alumni from McMaster, Mohawk or Redeemer can register using their school credentials. Community members who didn’t attend these institutions can still register with their personal information. 

When you register, you’ll receive a confirmation email—this email is your ticket to enter the event. If you don’t see it shortly after registering, please be sure to check your junk or spam folder.

This is a free event. Advanced registration is required to attend. Register here. Students, please register by using your student id/number. Alumni, please bring your alumni ID.

Members from the local Hamilton community are welcome from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Advanced registration is required to attend. (no ID required).

How do I prepare for the job fair? 

What should I wear to the job fair? 

Wear what makes you feel comfortable. We recommend business casual attire for job fairs and networking events.

At the fair, there will be an accommodation supports table in the foyer when you arrive.

Is the Convention Centre wheelchair accessible? 

Yes, it is, starting right from the underground parking lot. Guests can be dropped off at the front doors or take an elevator right from the under-parking lot, directly into the facility. Additionally, all washrooms are wheelchair accessible and hallways are wide set. Learn more on the Convention Centre website’s accessibility section. Wheelchairs are also available on site in the case of an emergency.

What do I do when I get there? 

Get your QR code scanned from your confirmation email at the door. Then, you’re all set to go to visit employer booths. Signage will be posted to help you get there. We recommend planning which employers you want to connect with in advance.

What is a career fair?

Career fairs are events that connects McMaster students with employers to provide information to students about their respective companies and organizations. Most importantly, they provide information about their recruiting process.

If you have never been to a career fair before, come early. There is often a line-up to enter.

What type of positions are employers seeking?

There are full-time, part-time, co-op, internship, summer, contact, casual, new grad and volunteer positions.

How do I find out who is hiring? 

On this page, visit the meet the organizations and industries tab.

What should I wear to the job fair?

Wear what makes you feel comfortable. We recommend business casual attire for job fairs and networking events.

What do I do when I get there?

Try to arrive at least an hour before the fair ends. Have your student card ready at the check in table. Once you enter the career fair, you can explore the booths.

Should I bring my resume and cover letter?

You can bring copies of your resume, a portfolio or business cards (if applicable), a pen and paper.

Tip from an employer: How to engage at the booth?

Prepare your elevator pitch to clearly highlight who you are, your skills, and your career goals. Ensure your resume is well-organized, showcasing your skills, experience and the opportunities you’re seeking. Be engaging, confident and enthusiastic.

Everyone’s career and education journeys are different — come explore your options with help from program reps

Explore your further education options by attending the Graduate and Professional Schools fair, where you can explore programs and find helpful information to guide your application process. Connect face-to-face with school reps, pick up brochures and expand your network while gaining insights to support what’s next.  

Even if you haven’t made the final decision to continue your education after your undergrad, we still recommend attending the fair to explore your options and find out what opportunities may be available to you. This is a chance to gather information, ask questions and discover the paths you can pursue.

Three days full of opportunities to explore your options

  • September 22, 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.: Want to pursue further education at Mac? Attend a full day for McMaster programs.

  • September 23 and 24, 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.: Discover opportunities and programs from other schools and institutions.

Why attend?

  • Explore a range of further education options, from graduate, medical and professional schools to postgraduate certificate programs.
  • Ask school reps questions about applications and admissions.
  • Connect with SSC career counsellors and staff who can help guide you through the process.

How it works

  • The fair is taking place in the McMaster University Student Centre (MUSC) Atrium.
  • Review participating organizations and register in advance through OSCARplus (registration link coming soon).
  • Drop in at any time during the event to browse booths. Learn about different programs, chat with school reps and ask questions to help improve your application.
  • Remember to collect brochures, contact information and additional details from the schools and programs that interest you. This way, you’ll be prepared when it comes time to apply.
  • Tip: It’s normal to feel nervous or intimidated. The school reps are there to connect with you, answer your questions and share more about their programs, so they’re eager to meet you!

Not sure what to ask a representative? Here are some ideas

General

  • What do you wish more students would know about your program or the application process?
  • Can I follow up with you if I have more questions? What is the best way to reach you?
  • Are there any information sessions I should be aware of?

Grades

  • What advice can you give to students who are concerned with their GPA?
  • Besides my GPA, what else can I do to prepare a strong application?
  • Sometimes students experience a term of low marks for various reasons.  Is there an area on your application that provides a space to explain extraordinary circumstances?
  • How do I know if my courses meet a prerequisite requirement?
  • How do you calculate the GPA?  Is there a minimum GPA versus the reality of those accepted?
  • Will the spring/summer course grades be counted towards my admission average calculation?
  • How are second degrees or courses taken as a continuing student considered?
  • When I drop a course and/or withdrawn and/or cancelled, how is this considered?

General Application

  • What are some tips you have for selecting references?
  • At what stage do references become part of the selection process?  How important is a strong reference?
  • What if I don’t have an academic reference?
  • Does my academic reference need to be from a subject area that aligns with my grad application?
  • How are my extracurricular and volunteer experiences considered in my application?
  • Do you accept applications after the deadline?

Diversity Recruitment

  • Do you have any access strategies that students might want to know?
  • What are your diversity recruitment streams?  Can you share the advantages (or disadvantages) of applying through a particular stream?
  • Do you have resources (e.g., webinars, peer conversations) to assist me with my application process?

Internationally-focused Programs

  • For professional programs abroad, what are some advice you’d give to students who want to return to Canada? What due diligence should be done?

Employment Opportunities

  • What is the employment outlook for graduates from this program?
  • What kinds of career pathways do your grads end up pursuing?
  • Are there career services available?

Program Specific

  • What are some of your most popular programs?
  • How is the program structured (classes, projects, research, etc.?)
  • What is unique about the way the program is run compared to similar programs at other schools?
  • Does your program meet the requirements of the regulatory or licensing body (for regulated professional programs)?
  • Is there an opportunity for co-ops, placements, or internships as part of this program? What supports are offered to help students gain practical experience?
  • Do you have multiple start dates for program(s)?
  • Do you have any tips or advice for applicants?
