The Student Success Centre is improving and expanding some services and changing its structure to better serve students and the campus community.
The changes are being made after the SSC sought input from students. Among the enhancements will be greater emphasis on supporting under-represented and at-risk students and focusing on key services such as career development, language and academic skills support and financial literacy.
“This is a timely re-envisioning that allows us to review and reposition our core services, which have remained unchanged since our inception in 2010”, says Gina Robinson, Director of the Student Success Centre. “Our mission continues to be to engage students and alumni in diverse learning opportunities to support their academic, personal and professional growth.
Student Affairs prioritizes providing the support, programs and space to ensure healthy students and student communities. The SSC’s re-envisioning builds on this foundation by emphasizing areas identified by students as the ones they think about most – academics, careers and finances.
Several changes are being adopted, including bolstering careers, employment, language and academic skills development.
New experiential learning and mentoring opportunities will be introduced and there will be further career development assistance for students not enrolled in co-op or intern programs. The SSC will continue its partnership with the Alumni Association connecting students with alumni and employers.
The changes also include an expansion of language and academic skills programs with specific focus on English as a Second Language (ESL). This expansion will allow the University to better serve the growing numbers of our international students.
Students seeking service learning and leadership development will be referred to campus and other partners.
“These changes will serve students where they need it most”, says Gina Robinson “Over the summer we’ll be putting these priorities into action in preparation for the upcoming academic year, and we look forward to continue working with our partners to deliver on our mandate.”
